It was revealed on July 15 that actor Takashi Sorimachi will play Chao Gai, one of the leaders of Liangshan Marsh, in the TV drama "Kitakata Kenzo Suikoden" (WOWOW, broadcast and streamed in 2026), starring Yuji Oda.
The film is based on the monumental historical epic novel "Suikoden" series (19 volumes, Shueisha Bunko) written by Kitakata Kenzo. It is a reconstruction of "Suikoden," one of the three great Chinese novels, and has sold over 11.6 million copies. It is the first of the "Dai Suikoden" trilogy, which was later followed by "Yang Lingden" and "Yue Fei Den."
The story is set in China at the end of the Northern Song Dynasty (early 12th century). It is a tale of rebellion by "outcasts" who lament the corrupt world and seek justice even if it means breaking the law, and is a grand ensemble drama that depicts the "will to resist unreasonable power" and "bonds with friends," which are still relevant today.
Chao Gai, played by Sorimachi, is a man of righteousness that endears him to the people, and a fiery fighting spirit. He is nicknamed "Takuto Tenno" for his righteous attitude and overwhelming bravery, and he brings together the people with his popularity and fierce fighting spirit. Together with Song Jiang (played by Oda), a "light-lighting charisma" who moves people with trust, he leads Liangshan Marsh and stands up against the corrupt state power.
Sorimachi has embodied masculinity in the "GTO" and "Aibou" series. This will be his second time acting alongside Oda, about six years after the Fuji TV drama "SUITS 2" (2020). In this work, the two will each embody completely different leadership roles and lead the ensemble drama as a "golden tag team."
Two visuals of Chao Gai with a beard were also released. In one cut with the English title, he is seen riding a horse and carrying a sword, charging forward to the front lines of the battle, while in another cut, he is seen shouting a rousing tirade to inspire the people. A video was also released in which Sorimachi, dressed in the costume, talks about his enthusiasm.
The ominous visual of a man standing wearing a mask, posted on the official SNS prior to the release, sparked discussion of who could be playing the role, and became a hot topic as a "hint" post made just before the release.
◇ Comments from Takashi Sorimachi (full text)
Two years ago, I received an offer with great enthusiasm.
"I want to see Takashi Sorimachi's Chogai. It's been my dream for a long time."
It was the first time in my acting career that I had been told that. Chao Gai, who excelled in military strategy and leadership, and who led the rebellion, was a true hero. I was captivated by the man called Chao Gai, and the joy of acting nurtured the character itself, and eventually nurtured me as well.
I am looking forward to delivering this epic and passionate film to everyone, which was shot in unison with Yuji Oda, the cast and staff. Please look forward to "Kenzo Kitakata Suikoden."
◇Comment from Director Setsuro Wakamatsu
Takashi Sorimachi is an interesting guy. His acting and his personality are both incredibly interesting. He wears a mask and stands on horseback, quiet and strange. No man looks better in a flashy blue outfit than him. His overwhelming appearance brings a smile to my face.
And Takashi Sorimachi is also shy. He is usually a reserved man who doesn't say much, but this time the mission he is taking on is incredibly heavy. He is another charismatic figure who challenges the world together with Yuji Oda, and is the polar opposite of the quiet Song Jiang, being decisive and having outstanding leadership skills. He must play a dynamic military strategist. I want him to show a fierce and strong man with a strong sense of chivalry. And yet, I want him to show a somewhat optimistic and nihilistic smile. It's a very difficult role, but I'm really happy that he also brings out a refreshing feeling like he's eating curry.
It is strange that the character of Chogai, who continues to emit a dazzling "living light," also looks similar to Takashi Sorimachi. Please look forward to the character of Chogai, who is played with enjoyment by Takashi Sorimachi.
