It was revealed on April 17th that the cumulative circulation of paper comics published by Shueisha for the works of manga artist Hiroshi Motomiya, known for works such as "Ore no Sora" and "Salaryman Kintaro," has surpassed 100 million copies. The latest comic book of his work, "Bunnaguri Sensei," serialized in "Grand Jump" (Shueisha), was released on the same day, marking the milestone of 100 million copies sold. Motomiya debuted in 1965 with the rental manga "Tooi Shimakage," and has achieved this remarkable feat in his 61st year as an artist. It was also announced that the "Hiroshi Motomiya Complete Manga Collection" series will be published starting November 19th as part of Shueisha's 100th anniversary celebration.
After making his debut in 1965 with the rental manga "Tooi Shimakage," Motomiya began serializing his first work for Shueisha, "Otoko Ippiki Gaki Taisho," in "Shonen Jump" (now "Weekly Shonen Jump") in 1968, making a significant contribution to the magazine's early success. Since then, he has expanded his publication to other magazines such as "Monthly Shonen Jump," "Weekly Playboy," and "Weekly Young Jump," creating numerous hit works such as "Koha Ginjiro," "Ore no Sora," and "Salaryman Kintaro," and has remained at the forefront of the industry for over 60 years.
The "Hiroshi Motomiya Complete Manga Collection" series is a project to fully compile the artistic career of Hiroshi Motomiya, encompassing 73 serialized works and 38 one-shots (as of April 2026), totaling approximately 65,000 pages of manuscripts. More than 152 volumes are planned for publication. Using extra-thick A5-sized paper, Motomiya's brushstrokes will be reproduced using the latest digital printing technology. The end of each volume will include commentary on the works by manga commentator Nobunaga Minami and explanatory notes by prominent figures from various fields. The first phase will consist of 33 volumes, including "Otoko Ippiki Gaki Taisho," "Ore no Sora," and "Koha Ginjiro," which will be published sequentially from November to December 2027. The second phase, starting in January 2028, will include "Salaryman Kintaro" and "Sawayaka Mantaro."
The first release of the first series, "Otoko Ippiki Gaki Taisho," will be available not only as individual volumes, but also as a limited-edition, made-to-order product: "Otoko Ippiki Gaki Taisho Complete 8-Volume Box Set 001-008 with Bonus Items." This set includes four bonus items at the same price as the original 8 volumes, and reservations will be accepted at bookstores nationwide until August 2nd.
