To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the broadcast of the otherworldly robot fantasy anime "Escaflowne" and the 25th anniversary of the theatrical release, it has been announced that a Blu-ray Disc (BD) box set containing the TV anime and the theatrical version will be released on March 25, 2026. The theatrical version will be shown again at Shinjuku Piccadilly (Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo) and other venues from March 20, 2026.
The Blu-ray box set includes special bonuses, including a special roundtable discussion between director Akane Kazuki and voice actors Tomokazu Seki and Miki Shinichiro, a memorial music video for the theme song "Promises Don't Need Anything," and a booklet with interviews with the main staff.
The story is about first-year high school student Kanzaki Hitomi, who is swallowed up by a pillar of light that suddenly appears and is transported to the planet Gaia. It gained popularity as an otherworldly robot fantasy that combines a medieval fantasy world with the essence of shojo manga. Maaya Sakamoto plays Kanzaki Hitomi, Shoji Kawamori is supervisor and series composition, Nobuteru Yuki is character designer, Kimitoshi Yamane is mechanical designer, and Yoko Kanno and Hajime Mizoguchi are in charge of music. A total of 26 episodes were broadcast in 1996.
The film was produced by the same main staff as the TV series, but the main characters and story were significantly changed. It was released in June 2000.
