It has been announced that a new TV anime series based on the popular game "Higurashi When They Cry" is in production. Souichiro Hoshi will reprise his role as Mai Nakahara Soichiro Hoshi , Mai Nakahara as Rena Ryugu, Satsuki Yukino as Mion Sonozaki and Shion Sonozaki, Mika Kanai as Satoko Hojo, and Yukari Tamura as Rika Furude. The series will be produced by Studio Deen, the same studio that produced the 2006 TV anime. A main visual featuring a smiling Rena Ryugu has been released, accompanied by the tagline "Welcome back, everyone."
The announcement was made during a special program, "TV Anime 'Higurashi When They Cry 20th Anniversary Special Program' Live Broadcast," which was streamed on Niconico Live and YouTube on June 21st, "Cotton Drifting Day," to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the TV anime.
"Higurashi When They Cry" is a doujin PC game created by game creator Ryukishi07 and released between 2002 and 2006. The story is set in a village with strange customs, where boys and girls confront a series of mysterious and bizarre murders. It was adapted into a TV anime in 2006 and 2007, with "Higurashi When They Cry: Gou" airing from October 2020 to March 2021, and "Higurashi When They Cry: Sotsu" airing from July to September 2021.
