It has been announced that the 78th Tony Awards ceremony, which will be held on June 9th (Japan time) at Radio City Music Hall in New York, will be broadcast live and streamed on WOWOW. This will be the first time the awards ceremony has been held at Radio City Music Hall in three years, since 2022.
The Tony Awards are given to plays and musicals that opened on Broadway in New York within a year from the end of April of the previous year (this year's applicable period is from April 26, 2024 to April 27, 2025), and are the most prestigious award in the American theater world. In addition to best play and best actor, there are also awards for directors, designers, and other staff members, and the ceremony features a number of spectacular performances related to the nominated works, including opening acts, making it a ceremony full of highlights.
The host of the 78th Tony Awards ceremony will be British actress Cynthia Erivo. Erivo won the award for Best Actress in a Musical (The Color Purple) at the 70th Tony Awards in 2016. The film Wicked (released in Japan on March 7th), in which she and Ariana Grande star, was nominated for Best Actress at the 97th Academy Awards. She visited Japan for the Japan premiere of the film, and made a stage appearance in Tokyo on the 19th of this month.
