In the NHK morning drama "Bakeke" (General TV, Monday to Saturday, 8:00 AM and other times), starring Akari Takaishi, Marui Wan plays Nozu Sawa, a childhood friend of the heroine Toki (played by Takaishi). In the 85th episode, broadcast on January 30th, Shoda (played by Shogo Hama), who has become an English teacher at Matsue Junior High School, expresses his sincere desire for Sawa to marry him. However, Sawa, who has a strong desire to leave the tenement house on her own, turns down Shoda's proposal... and so the story unfolds. Marui spoke about his impression of Shogo Hama, who plays Shoda, and his feelings for Sawa.
In the 17th week, Sawa meets Shoda, an English teacher who has just returned from Tokyo, at the salon "Shiratori Club." Shoda helps Sawa, who aspires to become a teacher, with her studies. The two gradually grow closer, but Sawa does not accept Shoda's proposal of marriage.
Marui revealed, "For me personally, I felt that Sawa was saved by having someone like Shoda, who was both a good understanding friend and a rival, and I played the role with that in mind." She added about Hama, who plays Shoda, "I get the impression that he is a very cheerful person who goes at his own pace. He really brightens up the set, and I think he is similar to Shoda."
"Also, she has a unique way of acting with pauses, which made me nervous in a good way. I read the script, so I knew what the next line was, but I was like, what's she going to say next... (laughs). I think she's someone who can give an exciting performance as Sawa."
Marui said of Sawa, "I think she's a rare type of woman in this day and age, but I think she has something that resonates with people today," and reflected, "I played Sawa with the hope that she would follow the path she believes in."
"Everyone may have times in life when they feel like they're not being rewarded, but I think it's important to first believe in yourself, and I hope that Sawa's example can convey that message," she said in her message.
