In the 30th episode, Utama's (Sometani Shota) mother (Mukairi Yuka) and the "man with the scar" Yasu (Takagi Katsuya) appear as ghosts, representing past trauma for Utama. Viewers responded with comments such as, "Maybe it's because it's summer, but they've added a horror twist," and "This is a ghost story episode that's perfect for the season."
The yellow-covered "Edo Nama Tsuyaki Kabayaki" sold well, and Koshodo in Nihonbashi became the biggest success since its opening.
Tsutaju (Yokohama) is working on a Kyoka picture book in collaboration with a Kyoka poet and an illustrator, and decides that now is the time to hire Utamaro, who is beginning to be rumored to be a "mimic of Utamaro." After that, Tsutaju asks Utamaro to draw a "picture that is unique to Utamaro," but Utamaro struggles with how to draw it.
Meanwhile, Matsudaira Sadanobu (Inoue Yuki) is invited by Harumasa (Ikuta Toma) to take part in government affairs.
Whenever Utamaro tries to face himself and paint, his mother and Yasu turn into ghosts and torment him. One day, Toriyama Sekien (played by Kataoka Tsurutaro), a master of yokai painting, comes to visit him. Sekien had a great influence on Utamaro when he was a child, and was like a mentor in life. Utamaro applies to become Sekien's apprentice, and leaves Tsutaju for a while... and so the story unfolds.
