The "METAL STRUCTURE Kaitai Shoki RX-93 ν Gundam" figure (Bandai Spirits), based on the ν Gundam from the anime "Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack," is generating buzz due to its upcoming re-release in August. This high-end figure, originally released in 2019, sold out quickly despite its price tag exceeding 100,000 yen, becoming a legendary item that has long been difficult to obtain. It has consistently sold out and generated buzz each time it has been re-released, but why is it so incredibly popular?
◇A thorough design philosophy
As the brand name suggests, the concept revolves around "deconstruction" and "construction." What if the fictional weapon, the ν Gundam, were treated as a real industrial product? This project offers one answer to this question using approximately 2000 parts.
Standing approximately 37 centimeters tall, this model features sharp sculpting using ABS resin, while also incorporating die-cast metal in some internal components, resulting in a substantial weight and metallic feel when held. The armor deployment gimmicks in various parts reveal the intricately crafted internal mechanisms, overwhelming the viewer with their level of detail.
The design philosophy is thorough. It considers the operational realities, asking questions like, "Which parts open during maintenance, and which parts work together during movement?" Unique considerations have been applied to the mechanisms, performance, and equipment of the entire body, from the head where the main camera and Vulcan cannons are integrated, to the arms which contain a complex hydraulic mechanism, and to the legs where even the thruster axes have been calculated.
◇Dramatic recreation of maintenance scenes
The attention to detail extends beyond the sculpting. The optimal coloring is pursued for each material, utilizing techniques such as gradient painting, metallic finishes, and electroplated metal parts. The shield's underside and the New Hyper Bazooka incorporate unique design interpretations that prioritize operational convenience.
A major feature is the built-in LED gimmick in the main body and base. In addition to the illumination of the cockpit and sensors, the spotlight on the base illuminates the aircraft. The dedicated base is modeled after a maintenance hangar, and by placing the included pilot and maintenance crew figures on it, fans can recreate a scene filled with the quiet tension of the moment before sortie, which is an irresistible attraction.
◇What about Fin Funnels?
The Fin Funnels, a symbol of the ν Gundam, are sold separately as optional parts. They were once available on Bandai Namco Group's shopping site "Premium Bandai," but are now difficult to obtain. With the re-release of the main unit, there is a growing demand for the optional parts to be re-released as well.
The "Kaitai Tōki" series saw the release of the Sazabi in 2022, which garnered significant attention. At "Tamashii Nation 2023," held in 2023, a "Kaitai Tōki" series figure of the Gundam Mk-II from "Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam" was displayed as a reference exhibit, but no further details have been announced. The new lineup is also attracting attention.
The "Kaitai Takumi-ki" transcends the realm of mere toys, exuding an elegance akin to a work of art. This re-release presents a rare opportunity to acquire this supreme masterpiece. (Manami Anima/MANTANWEB)
