It has been announced that a 4K remaster of "Angel's Egg," the legendary OVA (original video animation) directed by Mamoru Oshii and released in 1985, will be released on 4K ULTRA HD Blu-ray Disc (BD) and Blu-ray on April 22nd. The special limited edition will include a booklet containing storyboards, as well as a bonus feature of making-of footage for the 4K remaster.
"Angel's Egg" was director Mamoru Oshii's first original work, with Yoshitaka Amano in charge of the original concept and art direction. It was produced in an ascetic style, with almost monotone colors, very few lines, unusually long takes, and only about 400 cuts, about one-third the number of cuts in a normal anime. It was released as an OVA in 1985, and was screened in theaters for a limited time to commemorate its release.
A 4K remaster will be produced in time for the film's 40th anniversary in 2025. Under the supervision of director Oshii, the original 35mm film was scanned and remastered in 4K using the latest technology. The film has been showing in theaters since November 2025, grossing 76 million yen and attracting an audience of over 32,000 people.
