It has been revealed that voice actress Mayumi Tanaka will be voicing Monkey D. Luffy in the Japanese version of "THE ONE PIECE," a brand new anime series based on Eiichiro Oda 's popular manga "ONE PIECE." Tanaka has been voicing Luffy in the Toei Animation-produced TV anime "ONE PIECE," which has been airing since 1999, and will be reprising the role in the brand new anime. The announcement was made at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival 2026, the world's largest animation film festival, currently being held in France.
The new anime will be produced by WIT STUDIO, known for works such as "SPY×FAMILY" and " Attack on Titan," and will be a completely new animated adaptation starting from the first chapter of the East Blue arc of the original manga. It will be streamed worldwide on Netflix from February 2027.
Mayumi Tanaka commented, "I'm Mayumi Tanaka, the voice of Monkey D. Luffy. I'm happy to be able to participate in the new 'THE ONE PIECE' series once again as Luffy. I was a little anxious about starting anew at this age, but when I actually did it I made some new discoveries and was able to play Luffy with a fresh perspective. I really enjoyed the voice recording, so I hope many people will watch it. It will be available for streaming from February 2027, so please look forward to it!"
Director Masashi Koizuka commented, "The voice actors have given us such wonderful and heartfelt performances, so the animation team is also constantly giving 120% to match them." He spoke passionately about his love for "ONE PIECE," saying, "When the serialization (of the original comic) began, I remember feeling the same kind of excitement as when Luffy sets out onto the open sea, wondering what would happen next every week." He added, "Above all, we are focused on fully animating the amazing manga "ONE PIECE" created by Oda-sensei. We are making this with the hope that people will once again see a new "ONE PIECE" from the beginning."
A teaser trailer using footage from the main film has been released to the world for the first time. It depicts Monkey D. Luffy setting sail on the seas in search of the One Piece, the ultimate treasure, with the straw hat entrusted to him by Red-Haired Shanks, as he aims to become the Pirate King. The beautiful, endless blue sea, sparkling waves, and clouds floating in the clear blue sky are vividly depicted, and Luffy's idolized pirate, Red-Haired Shanks, along with Roronoa Zoro, Nami, Usopp, and Sanji, also make appearances. The video ends with a scene of Luffy powerfully firing his Gum-Gum Pistol at the Sea King.
Season 1 will cover 50 chapters of the original manga, depicting the story of Luffy's encounter with Sanji, the sous chef of the sea restaurant Baratie. The total running time is approximately 300 minutes, and all 7 episodes will be streamed at once. Koizuka is directing, Kishimoto Taku is in charge of series composition, and Kyoji Asano and Honda Takatoshi are in charge of character design and chief animation direction.
"ONE PIECE" is a TV anime series produced by Toei Animation that is currently airing. "THE ONE PIECE" is a separate project from the TV anime series, pushing the boundaries of visual expression that is only possible now, and depicting Luffy's adventures with a nostalgic yet fresh sense of realism.
