Actor Araki Sugo recently attended a press conference in Tokyo for the drama "People aren't judged by their appearance" (TV Tokyo, Thursdays at 12:30am), which he stars in and which will begin airing on January 8th. He looked back on his time as a middle and high school student, when he first began to care about his appearance.
When asked by the station's MC, announcer Furuhat Emika, "Was there an incident that made you start paying attention to your appearance?", Sugao replied, "I guess it was when I remembered that I wanted to be popular."
"You can start to like a girl from around elementary or middle school, right? I think you just know you like her. Maybe it was around middle or high school? I would practice putting wax on before getting in the bath, then take it off afterwards..." she revealed, recalling, "You had time to practice waxing, right? If you do it in the morning and make a mistake, you can't wash it off, so you would practice before getting in the bath."
Ayame Goriki, Maria Tani, Yuki Tokito, Shingo Fujimori, and Yui Imaizumi also attended the press conference.
"I Thought People Were Not Determined by Appearance" is an original drama about the protagonist, Yamato Ishiguro (played by Sugo), who has devoted his life to baseball throughout his elementary, middle, high school, and college years and has no particular interest in appearance. However, after entering the world of fashion magazines, he begins to rethink what it means to be "individuals on the outside." After each episode airs, it will be streamed on "U-NEXT" and "Prime Video." It is scheduled to air on BS TV Tokyo from January 11, 2026, at midnight on Sundays.
