Behind-the-scenes footage and comments from the mystery horror film " Hikuidori wo, Kuu the Firebird" (directed by Motoki Katsuhide, scheduled for release on October 3rd), starring actor Koshi Mizukami as the lead, Mizuki Yamashita as the heroine, and Ryota Miyadate Ryota of the popular group "Snow Man" as a key paranormal expert, were released on September 10th.
The film is based on the novel of the same name by Hara Hiroshi, winner of the 40th Yokomizo Seishi Mystery & Horror Award (Kadokawa Horror Bunko). One day, a mysterious diary written by Sadaichi, the older brother of Kuki Yuji (Mizukami) and his wife Yuriko (Yamashita), who live in Shinshu, arrives. The diary's final page contains the words "I want to eat the Hikuidori," expressing a desire for life. Since that day, mysterious events have been occurring frequently around the happy couple. Paranormal expert Hokuto Soichiro (Ryota Miyadate) joins them in their quest to uncover the truth, but what they uncover is a shocking world... This is a mystery horror story.
Mizukami plays the main character, Yuji, a serious character who exudes deep love for his wife, Yuriko. Yuji lives a peaceful life with Yuriko in the countryside of Shinshu, but as he investigates the mystery of the frequent strange occurrences, he finds himself at the mercy of the others, as Mizukami captivates with his wide acting range. Mizukami said that he deepened his understanding of the story through close discussions with the director and producers, and worked hard to create his character.
Miyadate, who co-starred with Mizukami for the first time in this film, described his impression of her as "a serious and responsible person." He revealed, "I witnessed her taking the initiative to talk to the staff on set, and by doing so, she sometimes livened things up and sometimes closed things down, creating a sense of balance on set."
Yamashita, who has been acclaimed for her excellent acting skills since her days in Nogizaka, plays Yuji's wife, Yuriko, exuding a mysterious aura that seems to have a shadowy quality. In playing the role of Yuriko, Yamashita said she thought of her as being "caught between Yuji and Hokuto, being pulled by both." She said, "While she wants to follow her husband, somewhere inside she resonates with Hokuto. Emotionally she is constantly shaken by the two of them. She is a girl who is carrying a lot inside her, so even though she tries to suppress her emotions, there are times when her emotions become turbulent due to Hokuto's actions."
Yuriko has a special sense similar to Hokuto, and it is hinted that they had some kind of relationship during their university days. Yamashita later revealed that he was conscious of expressing Yuriko's complex emotions, wishing to live a quiet life in the countryside.
The character who leaves the strongest impression in the film is Hokuto Soichiro, played by Miyadate. In order to solve the mystery of the strange happenings, they enlist the help of Hokuto, a paranormal expert, and with the arrival of Hokuto as a key figure, the story begins to move forward.
The deciding factor in entrusting Miyadate, who will be appearing in a film solo for the first time, with such an important role was his own character, which has a touch of theatricality but also a natural acting style and a noble aura. Producer Yokoyama Kazuhiro explained the reason for his casting, saying, "I wanted to make the most of his potential, including his public image." He created the character of Hokuto, who comes between Yuji and Yuriko, through repeated discussions with the director about the direction of his acting, in order to convey the feeling of an "alien" in the character.
What kind of chemistry will the perfect balance between Mizukami, Yamashita, and Miyadate create? Don't miss the performances of these popular actors.
