The eighth episode of the TBS Sunday Theatre drama "Diamonds Sleeping in the Sea" (Sundays at 9pm), starring Ryunosuke Kamiki, will be broadcast on December 15th.
In the previous story... An explosion and fire broke out inside the mine. Miners and staff tried desperately to put out the fire, but it could not be put out, and about 15 people were injured.
The mine manager, Tatsuo (played by Sawamura Ikki), decides that it is impossible to put out the fire and orders all miners to evacuate from the mine. He announces that once the evacuation is complete, the deeper areas that have not yet been put out will be submerged and abandoned.
As Shinpei (Saito Takumi) tries to retreat, he sees his late wife Eiko (Sato Megumi). It was because he inhaled carbon monoxide. "She's dead. It's a hallucination," Shinpei realizes, and calls out the names of Rina (Ikeda Elaiza) and the others. However, he collapses on the spot...
Episode 8 is... 1964. Four months have passed since the mine was closed on Hashima Island after an explosion could not be prevented. Many of the miners have left the island, and those who remain are beginning to lose hope. In the Araki family, Ippei (Kunimura Jun) falls ill after years of strain.
Nevertheless, Teppei (Kamiki) works hard to develop a new area with untapped coal seams and somehow revive the island.
Teppei and Asako (Hana Sugisaki) go on a date to Nagasaki for the first time in a long time, avoiding the attention of others. The two of them build a good relationship, but there are also bad rumors about Teppei.
In a modern hospital, Izumi (Nobuko Miyamoto) is taking a dementia test at Kazuma's (Toshinori Omi) suggestion. Izumi's secretary, Sawada (Yoshi Sakamoto), keeps a close eye on Kazuma, suspecting that he is up to no good.
Reo (Kamiki, in a dual role) is searching through Hashima's archival footage and documents at an auction in an attempt to trace Teppei's whereabouts, when a host from the host club where he used to work comes to see him...
The drama is written by Akiko Nogi, directed by Ayuko Tsukahara, and produced by Junko Arai, and is produced by the team behind the TV drama "MIU404" (same network) and the film "The Last Mile." It is a story of love, friendship, and family set on Hashima Island (Gunkanjima) in Nagasaki Prefecture, which developed through coal mining from the early Meiji period to the postwar high economic growth period, and in modern-day Tokyo.
