A screening event commemorating the 10th anniversary of the TV anime broadcast of the popular Gundam series "Gundam Reconguista in G (G-Reco)," entitled "G Reconguista 10th Anniversary Event - This is Our Reconguista!", was held on November 16th at Shinjuku Piccadilly (Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo). The event screened all five movies, and lasted about nine and a half hours including the stage greeting.
Director Yoshiyuki Tomino appeared on stage to thank the fans, saying, "You guys, stop it already! Do you know how old I'll be when it's the 15th anniversary? That being said, I can say this because of all of you. Thank you." He also said, "I'm not asking you to continue supporting me for a long time. I myself have a lifespan. But the work will remain. I'm going to be a bit brazen. I'd be happy if you could pass on the work to the next generation. Speaking only of today, please be patient and watch for a long time."
Also appearing on stage to greet the audience were Shimamura Yuu, who plays Aida Surgan, Kotobuki Minako, who plays Noredo Nagu, character designer Yoshida Kenichi, Yasuda Akira, mechanical designer, and Bandai Namco Filmworks producer Naka Toshikazu.
When the topic turned to the 10th anniversary illustration drawn by Yoshida, Producer Naka said that he thought it would be too much to ask for around 20 characters, but Yoshida ended up drawing over 70. Yoshida said that it took three days for the line drawings and three weeks to complete the work, and Director Tomino commented, "It's really amazing. There aren't many people who can draw this many characters," and "This is the true strength of a professional, so anyone who wants to become an illustrator should use people like this as an example and surpass them."
The thoughts and interpretations of the work posted in the "All Earthlings Should Watch G-Reco!" campaign on social media were also introduced, and Director Tomino bowed deeply and said, "You have summed it up so succinctly and skillfully. I can't just say thank you, and I'm not just saying this as flattery." Some posts said, "My experience with G-Reco is connected to reality," and "I learned the importance of actually experiencing things," to which Director Tomino smiled and said, "As a creator, it makes me very happy that people are becoming aware of this in their daily lives through G-Reco, and I feel that it has given me a sense of pride."
Yasuda expressed his gratitude, saying, "The G-Self plastic model came out the other day, right? A lot of people on the Internet were making a fuss about it, saying, 'It's been 10 years, and people are still making a fuss about it!' It made me realize that I was being a bit naive. There are even more interesting people here today, so... I really... thank you."
Yoshida said, "The 10th anniversary... I got farsighted while working on the first episode of 'G-Reco.' I suddenly couldn't see Gundam anymore. And then, during the five-part film series, my hair turned white. It turned completely white. I'm grateful that you've all come today, including through all that time. In fact, it's been 18 and a half years since the project started, so thank you very much."
Shimamura said, "I don't feel like it's been 10 years yet, but thank you all so much for coming to celebrate the 10th anniversary of our very precious work, 'Reconguista in G.'" Kotobuki said, "Huh? Didn't we all get together last year too? It makes me feel like 'Reconguista in G' is like a family, like relatives. I think the warmth that emanates from the work is what has allowed us to maintain such warm relationships with everyone who's here today, and I'm really filled with gratitude. But next time, the 15th anniversary... or the 20th anniversary..."
The TV anime version of "G-Reco" was broadcast from October 2014 to March 2015 as one of the works commemorating the 35th anniversary of the birth of "Mobile Suit Gundam." It was the first time that Director Tomino had worked on a "Gundam" TV anime series in about 15 years since "Turn A Gundam."
It depicts the adventures of Bellri Zenam, a Capital Guard candidate who protects the Capital Tower, which brings the Earth's energy source from space. A five-part film version, which added new scenes to the 26 episodes of the TV anime, was screened from 2019 to 2022.
