Actor Ryoma Takeuchi attended the release commemoration event for the Netflix film "10DANCE" (directed by Keishi Otomo, released worldwide on December 18th) held in Tokyo on December 17th. Ahead of the global release, he spoke about his thoughts on the film and how it felt to take on the role of a professional dancer despite having no dance experience.
The film is based on the hit manga "10DANCE" (Kodansha) by Inoue Sato, which depicts the passion, fighting spirit, anguish, jealousy, and love of two men who are passionate about dance. Two professional dancers, Suzuki Shinya (Takeuchi) and Sugiki Shinya (Keita Machida), who are complete opposites in every way, decide to train together to take on the ultimate dance competition, "10DANCE," in which they dance a total of 10 dances, including five standard and five Latin dances. The two clash violently, but are eventually driven by their love for each other... This is the story.
When asked how he felt with the release just around the corner the next day, Takeuchi said, "It feels like it's finally here. I'm very happy. It's only been 12 years since I started acting, but this is the first time I've worked on a production where my mind and body have been so linked and it's been so fulfilling. Because it was that kind of production, when I think that it will finally reach the whole world, I feel very excited, happy and excited... I guess I'm like, 'Fly away!'"
He received the offer around his 31st birthday. After reading the proposal, he felt that "it will definitely be a tough battle. I will have to take on considerable risks. I will not succeed unless I put my whole life and my whole body on the line," but he decided to "try believing in my own potential" and "devote the year until I turn 32 to it."
Despite having no prior dance experience, she took on ballroom dancing for the first time in this film. "The first time I experienced Latin dance was on February 7, 2024, and filming finished on February 7, 2025, so it's been exactly one year. But I wasn't able to practice every day, and the actual amount of practice I had was probably around six months," she revealed.
Regarding his mental state during the filming period, he said, "I was on the verge of breaking down." He reflected, "The hardest thing was completely trusting Machida (Keita), my dance partner (Shiori Doi), the teachers, and the director. The moment I went beyond that 'trust,' there was an unexpected surprise. I'm glad I was able to trust everyone wholeheartedly. I can now send this out to the world full of confidence."
Keita Machida and director Otomo Keishi also attended the event.
