It has been announced that an original anime called "Inheritors of the Wind" will be produced by Aniplex, Live2D, and Drive. This is a new type of authentic period drama anime based on the Shinsengumi, directed by Kawamura Tomohiro, known for "GAMBA and his friends," with the script written by Narii Yutaka of the theater group Caramel Box and music by Kishida Shigeru of the band Quruli. A teaser PV and visuals have been released.
The announcement was made at the online event "Aniplex Online Fest 2025," held on September 13. Director Kawamura commented, "I am honored to be able to work with such wonderful colleagues to produce an original anime version of Narii Yutaka's new story of the Shinsengumi. Just like the Shinsengumi who came together under the banner of sincerity and with the same aspirations, we on the staff will work together as one and devote our all to this work. We will carefully portray each and every one of their passionate feelings. Please look forward to it."
Narii said, "When Aniplex asked me to create the definitive story of the Shinsengumi, I had never written a script for anime before, but I immediately replied, 'I'd love to do it! Let me do it!' I then thought of reintroducing Tachikawa Jinsuke, the main character we made when we did a play about the Shinsengumi with my theater group, Caramel Box. He's a kind-hearted man who is a complete failure with a sword, but is exceptionally fast. I wanted to use this man as the central character to depict the history of the Shinsengumi from the very beginning. I wanted to portray the lives of Okita Soji and the other Shinsengumi members to my heart's content. In this way, I completed a new story that is completely different from the play we did with Caramel Box. Afterwards, I had the opportunity to see the first episode of the anime, which was currently in production, and I was filled with emotion when I saw the characters I had written, Jinsuke and Okita, in action. I can't wait to see the rest! I myself am looking forward to the completion."
Kishida commented, "I've always loved Japanese anime, so I'm very happy to be involved in an original Aniplex production. My motto when composing background music is to clearly bring out the characters and worldview, and to gently envelop the world of the work. I would like to continue immersing myself in the production so that I can create good music. Please look forward to it."
