It has been announced that Tomato Soup's manga "A Witch's Life in Mongol," which was also chosen as the top female manga in "This Kono Manga ga Sugoi! 2023" (Takarajimasha), will be made into a TV anime and broadcast on TV Asahi. The anime will be produced by Science SARU, known for "Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!", "The Heike Story," and "Dandadan."
The story is set in 13th century Mongolia and is currently being serialized on Akita Shoten's manga site "Souffle." The story follows Sitara (Fatima), a former slave girl who was captured by the Mongol Empire, who meets Dregene, the sixth wife of the Mongolian emperor, who also has complicated feelings towards the Mongol Empire, and uses her wisdom to shake up the empire.
A promotional video using illustrations from the original work has been released on YouTube. The video introduces Shitara and Dregene and the story, set to Western Asian-style music. In response to the TV anime adaptation, Tomato Soup's illustrations of Shitara and Dregene have also been released.
Tomato Soup commented, "More than 10 years before I started drawing 'A Witch's Life in Mongol,' I was fascinated by the history of the Mongol Empire and thought, 'I wish there was an anime like this.' I then started playing around in my head, thinking about what kind of characters and story should be developed if an anime were to be made. I can't make anime, but I can draw a manga on my own. The ideas that I started drawing on the back of copy paper gradually accumulated, and before I knew it, they had become a comic. And now it is really on the verge of becoming an anime. I would like to thank everyone who has helped me get to this point. Now it has been handed over to the animation team and I will be looking forward to supporting 'A Witch's Life in Mongol' as it takes flight."
