It has been announced that a stop-motion animation called "My Melody & Kuromi" starring the popular Sanrio characters My Melody and Kuromi will be produced. The series will be exclusively distributed worldwide on Netflix from July. This year marks the 50th anniversary of My Melody's debut and the 20th anniversary of Kuromi's debut, and an animation starring the two will be produced to mark the anniversary year.
The anime will be an adventure story set in Maryland, where My Melody and Kuromi live. Tomoki Misato, known for "Pui Pui Molcar," will be the director, and playwright Muneko Nemoto will be in charge of the script. It will be produced by TORUKU, a stop-motion studio within WIT STUDIO. A special preview art and video featuring My Melody and Kuromi have been released.
My Melody commented, "Kuromi and Melody's anime will start in the summer. I want to bring excitement to lots of friends♪ Look forward to it." Kuromi commented, "A new anime featuring me and My Melody is starting! All the KUROMIES around the world will definitely watch it, right? Don't miss the cute me★."
Director Misato said, "I am very happy that we are finally able to announce this film in this precious year marking the 50th anniversary of My Melody and the 20th anniversary of Kuromi! We were so excited about this huge project, but with everyone's help we were able to relentlessly pursue all the challenges we wanted to take on with stop-motion, saying 'this is it!' I hope you will look forward to the big incident that takes place in the handmade Mary Land, the action that challenges the limits of stop-motion, and the adorable movements of the characters!"
Nemoto commented, "As a writer, it was like a reward to have my beloved Melody and Kuromi characters speak my lines. I actually wrote this script in 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I wasn't able to meet Director Misato and the producers in person, but we connected remotely from our homes at a set time each week, exchanged careful words, and all spent time building the foundation of this work together. It was a great support for me emotionally, and a treasured creative period."
"The film is filled with love for the world of My Melody, who is loved by people of all generations, so I think everyone, from adults to children, will be able to find their favorite scenes and lines. I am always filled with gratitude to My Melody, who always keeps my heart warm and positive, and sometimes makes me chuckle," she said.
To commemorate My Melody and Kuromi's anniversary year, there will also be collaborative projects with fashion brands VIS and Licca-chan.
