It has been revealed that a new animated feature film based on Hideaki Sorachi's popular manga "Gintama," titled "New Theatrical Edition Gintama: Yoshiwara in Flames," will be produced and released in 2026. The film will be a completely new anime adaptation of the "Yoshiwara in Flames" arc, also known as the most passionate and memorable episode in the original manga's history. It will be directed by Naoya Ando and produced by BN Pictures.
The "Gintama Maruchibasu Festival," an event for the 20th anniversary of "Gintama," was held on August 16th at the Hulic Hall Tokyo (Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo), where the production of a new animated film was announced. A teaser visual drawn by the original author, Sorachi, was also released.
The story is set in the underground red-light district of Yoshiwara, where Gintoki, Shinpachi, and Kagura of the Yorozuya enter a city that has lost its light and is now under the control of the "King of the Night," Housen. A teaser trailer was also released, beginning with Gintoki's line, "You can't put out my fire. You can't put out our fire." In addition to the Yorozuya members Gintoki, Shinpachi, and Kagura, characters such as Tsukuyo, Seita, Hiwa, Kamui, and Housen also appear. Also appearing in the episode are Katsura, a former Joi patriot and ally of Gintoki, as well as Kondo, Hijikata, Okita, and Yamazaki of the Shinsengumi, who did not appear in the original work.
"Gintama" is set in a fictional Edo, and the story follows Sakata Gintoki as he solves various cases brought to the general store with his friends Shinpachi and Kagura. The series began serialization in December 2003 in "Weekly Shonen Jump" (Shueisha), and the final episode aired in June 2019.
The first season of the TV anime aired from 2006 to 2010, the second from 2011 to 2013, the third from 2015 to 2016, and the fourth from 2017 to 2018. The theatrical anime "Gintama: The Movie - The Red Cherry Blossom Arc" was released in 2010, and "Gintama: The Movie - The Final Chapter - Be Forever Yorozuya" was released in 2013. The theatrical version "Gintama THE FINAL" was released in 2021. The TV anime "3rd Year Z Class Ginpachi Sensei," based on a spin-off of the "Gintama" spin-off "Gintama: 3rd Year Z Class Ginpachi Sensei," is also attracting attention as it will begin airing on TV Tokyo from October.
*Comment from Hideaki Sorachi
Thanks to everyone's support, Ginpachi Sensei will be adapted into an anime, and another movie is being produced. Thank you very much. It's been six years since the serialization ended, and yet it's still being used as a tool for dirty adults to make a little money, being sucked dry until it's no longer tasty. Looking at my bank account, I feel that this is the greatest honor for a writer. Gintama has managed to succeed in all three of its series: anime, novels, movies, and live-action versions...or rather, it's a rare, fortunate work that has managed to make it look like it's been successful and barely escape with a win, but if it continues like this, it will be unable to stop until it explodes at some point, so I feel that from Gintama's perspective, it would be a win to see it explode spectacularly due to Sugita's sexual issues or some other problem. Please look forward to Ginpachi Sensei, the movie, and Tomokazu Sugita's future success.
Than the dirtiest mastermind
