The 50th episode of the NHK morning drama "Omusubi" starring Kanna Hashimoto was broadcast on December 6th, and viewers were drawn to a line delivered by Yui (Hashimoto).
In the 50th episode, during a meeting to discuss disaster prevention training, Yui asks the members of the shopping district for help because there are not enough people to cook for the soup kitchen. Masato (Kitamura Yukiya) suggests asking Takao (Ogata Naoto), also known as "Nabe-san," but Misae (Kimura Midoriko) refuses, saying, "No. You can't rely on him!" and "That guy is the only one who keeps on crying forever."
When the saint replies, "Is it bad to keep your head down forever? I don't think there's anything wrong with it. I think the time it takes for people to recover is different," Yui responds, "Asparagus!" and begins to speak, "It takes about three years for asparagus to produce a stable harvest, right?"
She continued, "Tomatoes grow about two months after they flower. Broccoli grows three months after the seeds are planted. Scallions grow about 10 months... They all take different amounts of time to grow," and added, "Just like vegetables are different, I think it's different for each person." The shopkeepers in the shopping district expressed their understanding, saying, "I understand."
The asparagus that Yui used as an example also appears in the title sequence of the drama's opening credits, and on social media people have commented, "Asparagus has already been appearing in the opening credits since two weeks ago," "Now I understand the meaning of asparagus in the opening credits," and "It was all just a hint."
Additionally, comments were received in response to Yui's line comparing "everyone to each other" with vegetables, such as "I was moved to tears," "I liked the way Yui used the comparison to the growth of vegetables," "It really resonates with me because it's something she felt from her own experience, not something she learned from someone else," and "I definitely think so. Some people are strong, and some are weak. I think it's good that people are different."
