Akihisa Shiono, who made waves with his performance as Emperor Ichijo in the NHK Taiga drama "Dear Radiance (Hikaru Kimi e)," has been announced to co-star alongside Yua Shinkawa in the drama series "The Igarashi Couple Are Fake Strangers" (TV Tokyo, Wednesdays at 12:30am), which will begin airing on January 8, 2025. Shiono, who is also currently appearing in "Muno no Taka" (TV Asahi), "Tengu no Daidokoro Season 2" (BS-TBS), and "Golden Kamuy: The Hokkaido Tattoo Prisoner Struggles" (WOWOW), will be taking on a romantic comedy in the new year.

The drama is based on the manga of the same name by Umiishi Tomoe, and follows the lives of a estranged married couple, Aizawa Mahiro (Shinkawa) and Igarashi Naoto (Shiono), who happen to transfer to the same company and end up working together pretending to be strangers. The highlight of the show is the frustrating love story between the two, who are unable to be honest with each other.

Shiono said, "It's a novel premise of a married couple pretending to be someone else, but I think the content is a classic romantic comedy. The keyword is 'frustrating' (in a frustrating love story), which I wasn't familiar with at first, but as I watched the Igarashi couple, I gradually began to think, 'They're so frustrating.' I have the image that marital disputes often occur over small differences in the way things are said or the order in which they are communicated. I would like to value the sessions on set during filming."

Shinkawa appealed, "This work, which offers a glimpse into the lives and thoughts of each character within the theme of love and marriage, will resonate with many people, making them think, 'The road doesn't just go forward, it's okay to go backwards too.' Please look forward to it!"

Kaiishi, the author of the original work, commented, "I can't hide my surprise at the live-action adaptation. The cast is really amazing... thank you very much. The drama makes use of the tempo of the original work and adds even more depth to the conflicts and feelings of the characters. There are many humorous scenes, and I think it's a drama that will definitely cheer you up after watching it. I hope everyone will enjoy watching the growth of the Igarashi couple."

TV Tokyo producer Egawa Satoshi said, "They married because they loved each other, but after being together for a long time, they say too much, they can't express their true feelings because they're afraid of being disliked, they really want to be spoiled but can't be honest... I think everyone has had experiences like that. I hope you will enjoy the lovable yet "frustrating" outcome of these two people, sometimes watching and sometimes making comments, until the end."

The series will begin broadcasting on terrestrial TV on January 8th, but will be available exclusively on the video streaming service U-NEXT from 9pm on January 1st.
