Anka is currently appearing in the TBS Tuesday drama "Toki Sude ni Osushi!?" (Tuesdays at 10 PM). She plays Sakita Aika, a part-time employee at the supermarket "Fukutoku" where the main character Minato (Nagasaku Hiromi) works. Her excellent performance as Minamikawa Amina in last October's Tuesday drama "Jaa, Anta ga Tsukutte Miro yo" is still fresh in people's minds, and Anka is attracting attention on social media with comments such as "She's already back in a Tuesday drama" and "I'm happy to see Anka-chan again." We spoke to Anka about her experience.
◇Appearing in the Tuesday drama slot again: "Very excited"
The drama tells the story of Minato Machiyama, who, having finished raising her children, is bewildered by the "time to herself" she has gained at the age of 50, but begins her second life and jumps into a "sushi academy" where she can become a sushi chef in three months.
--When you were cast in this film, what were your impressions after reading the script?
I was also very excited to hear that I would be appearing in the Tuesday 10 PM slot, and the unique title piqued my interest, making me wonder what kind of story it would be.
When I actually read the script, I felt it was a very heartwarming story that gave me a chance to reflect on my own life, gently encouraged me, and depicted the warmth of human connection. The humor added to that made it very entertaining. I think it will definitely be a work that encourages viewers.
--What has the response been like?
I'm grateful that the show has been featured in online articles, with people saying things like, "That's the guy who played Katsuo's (Ryoma Takeuchi) junior in ' Jaa, Anta ga Tsukutte Miro yo it?'" and that it's been generating buzz.
Thanks to that hairstyle, I'm often told that people "recognize me instantly" (laughs). People around me also tell me that it looks good. Although our positions are different, such as colleagues and juniors, they've also said that I've become known for playing roles where I speak my mind a little, and I'm really happy to receive such kind words.
--What kind of person is Aika Sakita?
She's a colleague of Minato, played by Nagasaku, at the supermarket "Fukutoku," and she's a girl who lives life with all her might, pursuing her dream of becoming a band member. Actually, her current hairstyle was inspired by a certain work. You'll find out which work it was in episode 5.
This hairstyle makes me feel more like Aika, and I enjoy having it styled differently.
--You mentioned that you empathized with Aika. Could you tell us specifically what aspects of her character you found relatable?
She's chasing her dream. I myself have been acting since I was little, and I've worked hard to get this far with the dream of becoming an actress, so there are parts of us that can relate. I'm sure Aika had many options, but she chose this path because she felt it was the only one for her. I really empathized with that straightforwardness.
Sometimes I wonder if my current situation is the right one, or if there might have been a different path I could have taken. Even so, I was strongly drawn to the way you continue to pursue what you love with unwavering dedication.
-- Some of Aika's lines are encouraging to Minato, but how do you approach that?
I don't think Aika is saying these things with the intention of "giving him a push." Rather, she's simply expressing "this is what I think" in a natural way within their relationship, and I feel that Minato might take something away from that.
I think Aika herself has learned a lot from Minato, so rather than teaching her something, I'm acting with the image of mutual insights emerging through communication.
--The scene at the supermarket had some impressive dialogue, but what was the atmosphere like on set?
Ms. Nagasaku is a very friendly and unpretentious person who truly embraces you with her gentle nature. I was also impressed by the cute side she occasionally shows, and having seen various works of hers, I have great respect for her, and working with her has made me appreciate her even more.
I think Aika is able to rely on Minato a little because Nagasaku herself has a warm and approachable personality. While she is relying on Minato, she also speaks her mind and asks for her advice, so I think there's a sense of distance between them, like a younger sister, a daughter, and a junior colleague.
◇The filming set had a "homely atmosphere."
--Please tell us your impression of Masaaki Hirai of the comedy duo "Dansei Buranko," who plays Dai Numata, who works at "Fukutoku" just like Aika.
It's not often that I get to talk to my co-stars this much in the dressing room from the very first day of filming, but Mr. Hirai is a very open person, so the conversation came naturally.
Thanks to that, we've grown closer, and I feel like it's okay to add a little improvisation. I'm very grateful that they've created that kind of atmosphere, and they're a really interesting person.
--What are your impressions of Kenichi Matsuyama?
At first, I was nervous because of the slightly intimidating character setting of "Fish Boss," but in reality, he's a very down-to-earth person. He was a kind person who got excited talking with me about our favorite foods.
Everyone involved is truly wonderful, and the filming set has a very warm and welcoming atmosphere.
--Could you tell us some behind-the-scenes stories about episode 5?
The name of the band Aika is in is revealed, and some of the dialogue has been adapted to match it. The director and producer suggested this on set, and we incorporated some of the subtle adjustments.
--Finally, do you have a message for our viewers?
I believe this work is a drama that affirms each and every character while gently encouraging them.
I hope this film will be a catalyst for people to re-examine their lives and appreciate the happiness they already have, whether they have dreams and goals or are still searching for them. Please enjoy it to the very end.
