It has been announced that a second season of the TV anime "The Fable," based on the popular manga by Katsuhisa Minami serialized in "Young Magazine" (Kodansha), is in production. The second season will adapt the popular "Yamaoka Arc" from the original manga. Following the first season, Ryosuke Takahashi, known for "Armored Trooper Votoms" and "Fang of the Sun Dougram," will direct, and Tezuka Productions will handle the animation. The star-studded voice cast, including Kazuyuki Okitsu, Miyuki Sawashiro, Kana Hanazawa, Akio Otsuka, and Tetsuo Komura, will be reuniting for the series. A teaser visual has been released showing the protagonist, Akira Sato, holding his beloved gun, the Nighthawk.
Original author Minami commented, "Regarding the decision to animate the second season of the TV anime 'The Fable,' specifically the so-called 'Yamaoka arc,' I would like to express my deepest gratitude to director Ryosuke Takahashi and all those involved. As the original author, this chapter holds many fond memories for me, so I am very much looking forward to seeing who will voice the new characters such as Yamaoka, Azami, and Eucalyptus... and to seeing what kind of spirit will be breathed into Akira and Yoko with the new opening and ending themes... I am looking forward to it along with the viewers."
Director Takahashi said, "The characters in The Fable don't seem to use blogs or social media. Actually, I don't either. I've thought about trying it, but I won't right now. Some people ask why, and I answer, 'Because I've said what I want to say in the work.' I believe that 'The Fable' sends out a variety of messages for the present age. I'm thrilled to be involved in a project like this."
"The Fable" began serialization in the magazine in November 2014. The story follows Fable, a genius hitman feared in the underworld, who is given an order by his boss to "take a year off from being a hitman and live a normal life as an ordinary person in Osaka," and begins living a normal life under the alias Akira Sato.
Part 1 was serialized from November 2014 to November 2019, Part 2 from July 2021 to July 2023, and Part 3 has been serialized since March 2025. It was adapted into a live-action film starring Junichi Okada, and the first season of the TV anime aired from April to September 2024. The cumulative circulation of the comics exceeds 30 million copies.
