The second episode of the TBS Sunday Theatre drama "Reboot" (Sundays at 9:00 PM), starring Ryohei Suzuki, aired on January 25th. The exchange between Hayase Riku (Suzuki), who disguises himself as Gido, and his son Takumi (Yazaki Akira) moved viewers to tears.
◇The following contains spoilers
Hayase is told by the head of the underground organization, Goroku Wataru (Kitamura Yukiya), that he must find the real culprit behind the theft of 1 billion yen within 24 hours or he will lose his life. With the time limit fast approaching, he heads to Hayase Pastry Shop.
At the store, Hayase's mother, Yoshiko (Harada Mieko), and Takumi are making a prototype of custard cream. They taste the cream and remark happily, "It tastes just like my father's."
Hayase knocked on the shop door. "What's going on at this time of night?" asked Yoshiko with a puzzled look on her face. Hayase began, "Have you changed the way you make custard? Actually, despite how I look, baking is my hobby... I put vanilla in cold milk and bring it to a boil."
Yoshiko acknowledged this and revealed that she had received advice from regular customer Ichika (Toda Erika), to which Takumi happily replied, "And then it turned out to taste like my father's." Takumi took some of the prototype custard cream on a spoon and handed it to Hayase, urging him to "try it. It tastes like my father's," and after tasting it, Hayase commented with emotion, "It's a gentle flavor that makes me happy."
Yoshiko immediately asserts Hayase's innocence, saying, "Someone who can make such gentle flavors would never commit murder," and Takumi firmly replies, "Your father never killed your mother. Absolutely not." Hayase crouches down and meets Takumi's gaze, nodding and saying, "Yes."
On social media, comments such as "The scene with his son was tearjerking," "When he tasted the custard cream and looked at his son, I could see Riku for a moment," "Suzuki Ryohei was so amazing I was moved... His expression when he was with his son... he looked like Matsuyama Kenichi," "He has his precious son right in front of him, but he can't even hug him," "I wonder if Takumi will one day realize that the person inside Gido is Riku," and "Suzuki Ryohei is amazing. I can feel a bit of Matsuyama Kenichi in him" were widespread.
The drama is a suspense story about Hayase Riku, who is framed for the murder of his wife, abandoning his family and past to reboot himself as a corrupt detective, Gido, and pursue the real culprit. The script is written by Tsutomu Kuroiwa, who has worked on many hit Sunday Theatre dramas such as "Grand Maison Tokyo," "TOKYO MER: Running Emergency Room," and "My Family."
