It has been announced that Kyoto Animation's latest TV anime, "20th Century Electric Catalog - Eureka Evrika," will begin airing in July. It has also been announced that it will be exclusively distributed worldwide on Netflix from July. New visuals featuring the main character, Kihachi Sakamoto, and the heroine, Inako Momokawa, have been released.
Director Ota Minoru commented, "I am happy that this work, following on from Violet Evergarden, will be distributed worldwide by Netflix. This work is set in Kyoto, Japan in an "if" world where steam engines, rather than electricity, have developed abnormally, and depicts boys and girls struggling to live their lives. We wanted to deliver an expression that no one had ever seen before to anime fans, so all of the main staff took on the challenge of new expressions and have approached the work with great passion. The appeal of this work is the background art. Normally, background art should not outweigh the characters, but this time we deliberately increased the presence of the background art. It was difficult, but after many retries, I think we were able to create a screen in which the art and characters enhance each other."
"Production is currently in its climax, and the entire staff, including the cast, is breathing life into the work. I believe this will resonate with viewers and mark new territory for Kyoto Animation. The film will be available on Netflix in July of this year. I hope that our passion will reach everyone from Kyoto. Please look forward to it."
The film is based on the light novel "Nijisseiki Denki Mokuroku" by Hiroshi Yuki, published by KA Esuma Bunko. Set in Kyoto in the early 20th century, when only steam engines were developed, the story follows the encounter of a boy in despair after losing his older brother, with whom he dreamed of the "age of electricity," and a devout girl who lives with longing and regret for her late mother. As the characters uncover the secrets of the "Nijisseiki Denki Mokuroku," they come face to face with their past regrets, and rediscover their dreams and selves.
The film will be directed by Ota, who was also the instrument animation director for "Sound! Euphonium 3," and will mark his directorial debut. Urahata Tatsuhiko, who has worked on "Violet Evergarden" and "Baki," will be the series composer, Okamura Kohei, who has worked on "Free! -the Final Stroke- the Movie," will be the character designer and chief animation director, Suzuki Takaaki, who has worked on "Violet Evergarden" and "Girls und Panzer," will be in charge of world setting, and Koto Hitomi will be in charge of music. Yuma Uchida will play the protagonist, Sakamoto Kihachi, and Sora Amamiya will play the heroine, Momokawa Inako.
