NHK General TV's "Butterfly Effect: The Century of Film" (Mondays at 10 p.m.) will broadcast "Okinawa: Women of Love and Sorrow" on January 26th. The program will feature stories of love and sorrow that were born in Okinawa under American rule. During this unfortunate time, sincere love blossomed between American soldiers and Okinawan women, but few of them had happy endings.
In the 1950s, a business called "ghostwriting" emerged in Okinawa. Meetings between Okinawan women and American soldiers were born, overcoming the language barrier. Ghostwriting companies undertook the translation of love letters. However, love rarely lasted. American soldiers often suddenly disappeared from the women's lives or were lost in communication on the battlefield.
It is said that thousands of children were born to Okinawan women and American soldiers, but many of them never knew their fathers. This is the story of women who found love and then lost it on an island where men and women intersected. Narrated by announcer Ito Toshie.
