NHK's popular nature program "Darwin's Coming!" (General) will broadcast "Emergency Report! The Rampant Avian Influenza" from 7:30 PM on January 11th. Until now, bird flu has been known to spread only in poultry farms. However, it is now spreading not only among chickens but also among wild animals around the world. An emergency report from the field will be presented to find out what is happening.
The team encountered some suspicious deaths among wild birds in Hokkaido. In fact, there have been a number of cases of avian influenza infection among wild birds in recent years.
The program follows the efforts of veterinarians to save infected white-tailed eagles and a major investigation into the risk of infection over a five-year period. What emerges is the risk posed by "crowding" created by human activities and the efforts people are making to prevent it. The program also covers how the infection has spread to mammals such as foxes and seals, and human infections have even been confirmed overseas.
The program will be narrated by Tatsuta Naoki, Toyoshima Machiko, Takayuki Yamada, Inori Minase, and Hirose Tomomi.
