NHK's documentary program "Document 72 Hours" (General) will air "Tokyo: From a Bridge Overlooking the Big City" on Getsuku at 10pm. The setting is the Toyosu Bridge, which spans the Harumi Canal in Tokyo. What are people thinking on this bridge, which offers a panoramic view of the bay area and skyscrapers?
Toyosu, a waterfront area of Tokyo lined with high-rise apartment buildings, is where the 550-meter-long Toyosu Bridge opened seven years ago.
It's an excellent 10-minute walk across, and with a panoramic view of the bay area and the buildings, it's a place where all sorts of people come and go: people who work at Toyosu Market, university students who have come from Chiba to see the night view, and people sitting on benches, gazing into the distance and thinking.
What do people think when they stand on a bridge, far from the hustle and bustle of the city? I listened for three days.
This documentary program focuses on a single location each time, observing the various human dramas that occur there over a period of 72 hours. It listens to the stories of people who meet by chance, capturing the current era.
