The show "Junin Jyuuni-iro ~As Many Family Forms as There Are Houses~" (MBS, Saturday 5pm, Kansai local and other channels) hosted by talent Mika Mifune and actor Taro Suruga, will feature a "half-renovated house" in a huge vacant house in Gujo City, Gifu Prefecture, on December 6th.
The residents are a 35-year-old couple who moved from Nagoya to Gujo Hachiman a year and a half ago and purchased a house there. The house was a vacant, retro 65-year-old house that had previously housed a beauty salon. As a result of repeated additions and renovations, the house has a rather complicated structure, and even has a basement that acts as a hidden room.
The large house, which consists of five buildings, would be extremely expensive to demolish or completely renovate. Therefore, the idea was to renovate only half of the entire building. The 15-tatami living/dining room was created by combining what were originally two Japanese-style rooms into one space. The space above the side was made into an open-ceiling space to allow for more light, and the closet and alcove on the second floor were removed, leaving the impressive beams intact.
The old exposed earthen walls and old nails were left as a "rough finish" to halve the renovation process. The kitchen walls were also left roughly finished rather than painted, reducing costs. In the future, the couple plans to turn the untouched former beauty salon into a showroom for the furniture remake and sale they began after moving here.
"Jyunin Jyuiro" is a program that visits homes all over Japan and introduces the residents' preferences and charms for their homes. After broadcast, it will be available on TVer for one week.
