Arakawa, a member of the popular comedy duo "Elf" known as a "gal comedian," recently released her first photo essay, "Ningen Gokaku Elf Arakawa 1st Photo Essay" (Futabasha), in which she appears in makeup that makes her look like a completely different person. In the book, she candidly discusses her life up to now, including her childhood when she was crazy about karate and danjiri, her first boyfriend whom she even considered marrying, an encounter at a night club, and her youth when she bombed so much she lost a lot of weight.
Arakawa recalls, "Ever since elementary school, I've thought I wasn't cute, and there are no photos of me showing me from the front. Whenever something bad happened, I thought it was because I was ugly. I just hated myself." She continues, "I was always thinking about how I could get people to recognize me as a person. What could I do that other kids could do better?"
The photo essay also includes 30 pages of newly shot gravure photos. It introduces "Arakawa-style gal fashion" shot in Shibuya, the mecca for gals, as well as her "heavy makeup" techniques that have been a big hit on TikTok, her flashy nail collection, and even her personal belongings. A5 size, 144 pages. 1,980 yen.
