Celebrity Tetsuko Kuroyanagi will release a new full-length essay, "Totto Ashita" (Shinchosha), on June 26th. The cover photo was taken 64 years ago, in 1961, when she visited America on a reporting trip for "Weekly Shincho". The photo shows Kuroyanagi, now 91 years old, in her late 20s. This was her first time abroad. The book contains "24 famous quotes" that have encouraged her in various situations in life.
Regarding the cover photo, Kuroyanagi said, "When the St. Lawrence Seaway was opened, it became possible for Japanese ships to enter Lake Michigan in Chicago, USA, as a regular route from the Atlantic Ocean, earlier than anywhere else. On board the Iino Kaiun ship that entered Lake Michigan, a message from the governor of Tokyo was delivered to the mayor of Chicago. I was the first TV actress to start appearing on TV, and as I was like an idol at the time (!), I was chosen to play that role."
The book's title is taken from a line spoken by the protagonist Scarlett O'Hara at the end of "Gone with the Wind" by Margaret Mitchell, a book Kuroyanagi has loved since she was a girl: "Because tomorrow is another day."
The book looks back on Kuroyanagi's life, tracing the words of those who were precious to her, including her then-principal at Tomoe Gakuen, Kobayashi Sosaku, the actor Sugimura Haruko, the playwright Iizawa Tadashi, the television writer Nagai Rokusuke, the opera singer Maria Callas, the children she met in India, and her father, the musician Kuroyanagi Moritsuna. 240 pages, 1,760 yen.
