Brain scientist Nobuko Nakano appeared on Tetsuko Kuroyanagi's long-running talk show "Tetsuko's Room" (TV Asahi) broadcast on May 30th. Nakano has been a commentator on "Oshita Yoko Wide! Scramble" (TV Asahi, Monday to Friday, 10:25am) since 2014. She spoke about the effect that being a commentator has on the brain.
Regarding her work as a commentator, Nakano said, "I have to comment on all kinds of topics in the world, but it's not interesting if I just say something general, and if I comment from an area that's not my specialty, people say, 'Why doesn't that person have that kind of insight?'" she said, "I think that if I make comments that are based to a certain extent on my specialty, but don't make them too difficult, it's quite a brain exercise. I'm grateful to be able to get paid while I train."
He continued, "People who communicate well with others have a lower risk (of developing dementia)," and added, "As a commentator, you meet all kinds of people, so if you stay at university and only do research, for example, your communication will be limited, but compared to that lifestyle, you meet and talk to far more people, so I think it's very good training. It's a good job."
