NHK's educational program "Ukiyo-e EDO-LIFE" features ukiyo-e prints linked to the story every week, in order to help viewers enjoy the station's historical drama "UNBOUND (Berabou)" (General TV, Sundays at 8pm and others) more deeply. On September 12th, "The World of UNBOUND: Utamaro's 'Wife' - With All My Heart for My Beloved" will be broadcast on BS Premium 4K from 6pm and on NHK Educational TV from 11:50pm.
This time we will be introducing "Needlework," a graceful and realistic depiction of a woman by Kitagawa Utamaro, which was created between 1794 and 1795.
Women working together as a family. In the Edo period, sewing was an important job for housewives. Usually, they would mend things or make small items using scraps, but this day was a little special. They spread out a long, large piece of cloth and were in the middle of tailoring a new kimono. The wife, holding the high-quality silk fabric, seemed to be making a formal outfit for her husband. She paid no attention to her child beside her, and seemed excited to pour her heart into making something for her loved one...
"Utamaro's Wife: With All My Heart for My Beloved" premiered on August 3, 2020.
