It has been announced that a 4K digitally remastered version of Studio Ghibli's animated film "Princess Mononoke" (directed by Hayao Miyazaki) will be screened in IMAX theaters nationwide from October 24th.
When it was first released on July 12, 1997, it was a huge hit, attracting an audience of approximately 14.2 million people and grossing approximately 19.3 billion yen at the box office, and now it's being brought back to the IMAX screen in the highest quality 4K digital remaster supervised by Studio Ghibli. The 4K digital remaster brings out the fine details of the images, making the greenery of the forest, the expressions of the characters, and the action scenes stand out even more. IMAX screenings allow you to enjoy high-definition images and clear sound.
The visuals for the theatrical release of the 4K remastered version have also been released. The clay mask worn by San is designed to express her sadness and anger.
"Princess Mononoke" explores the coexistence of humans and nature. Ashitaka, a young man cursed by a god, and San, a girl raised by an inugami, become embroiled in a battle between humans who seek to destroy nature and the gods who protect it. Matsuda Yoji plays Ashitaka, Ishida Yuriko plays San, and voice actors Tanaka Yuko, Kobayashi Kaoru, Mori Mitsuko, Miwa Akihiro, and Morishige Hisaya appear. When it was released in 1997, the film broke the all-time box office record for a Japanese film. A re-release in 2020 saw an audience of approximately 15 million, bringing in box office revenue of approximately 20.18 billion yen.
