It has been announced that the late Matsumoto Leiji's "unfinished masterpiece" manga "The Ring of the Nibelung" will be revived as a complete edition of all four volumes entitled "The Ring of the Nibelung Complete Edition" (Shogakukan).
"The Ring of the Nibelung" is based on the opera that Wagner took a quarter of a century to complete, and is a major production featuring all of Matsumoto's familiar characters from his works, including Captain Harlock.
From the second part, the publication was moved online, and even though the internet penetration rate was less than 10%, it became a pioneer of web manga serialization, recording 400,000 hits per day. The fourth part, "Twilight of the Gods," began serialization in July 1999, but was last updated in 2000 due to Matsumoto's busy schedule, leaving it unfinished. In 2010, the website where it was serialized was closed, so it was not possible to read it, but after about 25 years, it will be made into a comic book for the first time. The first volume was released on June 20th, and thereafter, one volume is scheduled to be released each month.
