"The House in the Middle of Nowhere" (ABC TV/TV Asahi, Sunday 7:58 p.m.) is a variety show that uses satellite photos to find a secluded house. The March 23rd broadcast follows the life of a 97-year-old woman who lives alone in the mountains of Shizuoka Prefecture, tending to her fields.
The guests are TV personality Momoko Kikuchi and actor Yukiya Kitamura. This will be the second time for both of them to appear as guests. Kikuchi said, "I was born and raised in Tokyo, so I've always dreamed of living in an isolated house. I feel like my yearning to live in a place surrounded by nature is getting stronger every year," and Kitamura confessed, "I've started to think that one day I'd like to spend my days reading scripts in the quiet depths of the mountains."
The satellite photos the search team obtained showed a vast site in the middle of dense mountains, with well-maintained fields and a large light blue-roofed building. It seemed to be a fairly deep mountain area even within Shizuoka Prefecture, and the search team continued driving along mountain roads for over an hour before finally reaching the nearest settlement. As soon as they saw the satellite photos, a man (89) who runs a guesthouse told them, "A grandmother in her mid-90s lives here alone. She's even good at using the latest telephone (smartphone) (laughs)."
The search team, guided by the man, left the village, crossed the river and headed toward the mountain where the house was located. The forest road was so steep that it blocked out the sunlight. After crossing another mountain, the mountain path continued with a steeper slope.
As the view cleared at the end of the cliff path, a house came into view. A lively 97-year-old woman greeted us with a smile. Since losing her husband 13 years ago, she has been living alone in this area and working in the fields. She visits the field, about 300 meters from her house, almost every day, saying it's just a short walk, and grows cabbage, potatoes, and other crops.
On weekends, her eldest son (71) and third son (64) visit her house and do the week's shopping. In addition, seven "monitoring cameras" are installed in the house, so the sons can check on their mother's life and keep in touch with her so that she doesn't feel lonely. In the studio, guest Kitamura said, "I thought that this is the secret to a long life."
