It has been revealed that the latest work in the popular anime series "Gundam", "Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX", will be produced. Sunrise, which produces the "Gundam" series, and Khara, known for the "Evangelion" series, will team up for the first time, with Kazuya Tsurumaki as director, Yoji Enokido as series composer, and Ikuto Yamashita in charge of mechanical design. The announcement was made at the "Gundam Conference WINTER 2024" presentation, which was streamed on YouTube on December 4th. Bandai Namco Filmworks producer Naohiro Ogata and Khara producer Yuki Sugiya explained the background to this first collaboration.
Producer Ogata revealed the circumstances of their first collaboration, saying, "The planning began around 2018. Prior to that, I had worked with Producer Sugitani on the seventh episode of Mobile Suit Gundam UC. As we were planning a new Gundam series, I first approached Sugitani and said, 'I'd like to create a new Gundam with Director Tsurumaki.'"
A trailer featuring mobile suits and other creatures was also released, and Producer Ogata commented, "We had the great opportunity to work with Director Tsurumaki, so we were curious to see how much color he would be able to bring out. I think that's what the footage is about."
Producer Sugiya commented on the production, "Because it's a series with a long history, there was pressure and I wondered if it was okay to do something like this, but Ogata-san told me, 'A new approach is better. Feel free to do it,' so I was able to do it freely and at my own pace. I think the film was one where I was able to do what I wanted as a director." Regarding the luxurious staff, he said, "I was able to ask people that Director Tsurumaki can trust."
The new work will be broadcast as a TV anime series on Nippon Television, and ahead of the broadcast, a reconstructed version of some episodes, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning-, will be screened at 373 theaters nationwide from January 17, 2025.
According to Producer Ogata, the new film will be "a representative work heading into the 45th and 50th anniversaries of Gundam." He added, "The experience of watching the movie, like Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM, also has a festive element to it. This is a rare endeavor involving khara and Sunrise, so I'm excited to experience it with everyone at the theater."
The protagonist of "Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX" is a high school girl named Amate Yuzuriha (Machu). Amate Yuzuriha, who lives a peaceful life in a space colony floating in space, meets a war refugee girl named Nyaan and gets involved in an illegal mobile suit duel competition, a clan battle... This is the story. Amate, who goes by the entry name Machu, pilots the GQuuuuuuX and throws herself into daily battles. At the same time, an unidentified mobile suit called Gundam, which is being pursued by both the space army and the police, and its pilot, a boy named Shuuji, appear before her. The protagonist's machine, GQuuuuuuX, is a mysterious state-of-the-art mobile suit piloted by Machu, and participates in clan battles as a machine belonging to the Pomeranians.
Tomoyo Kurosawa will play Amate Yuzuriha, Yui Ishikawa will play Nyaan, a girl who works as an illegal courier, and Shimba Tsuchiya will play Shuuji Ito, a mysterious boy who appears before Machu and Nyaan.
