The film "The Imaginary Dog and the Lying Cat," starring actor Takasugi Mahiro, will be released on January 9, 2026, and the first trailer was released on September 29.
The latest film from director Morigaki Yudai, known for films such as "Ai ni Rōjitsu." Based on the novel of the same name by Terachi Haruna, the screenplay was written by Kanno Tomoe, winner of the Japan Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for "Asada Family!" The story follows the dysfunctional Haneko family over the course of 30 years, where the mother, who has lost sight of reality after the death of her younger brother, and the rest of the family turn a blind eye to the "inconvenient truth" but still continue to live together. Takasugi plays the main character, Haneko Yamabuki.
Ito Marika will play Sato Rai, Yamabuki's childhood friend and lover, and Fukagawa Megumi will play Toyama Kanako, Yamabuki's first love. Other cast members include Ando Yuko as her mother Yukino, Mukaizato Yuka as her older sister Beni, Yasuda Akira as her father Jungo, Yo Kimiko as her grandmother, and Emoto Akira as her grandfather.
