"Human Gourmet Entry: Surprisingly Delicious Restaurants" (Chukyo TV/Nippon TV Network, Tuesdays at 7 PM) is a variety show that introduces restaurants that defy expectations. On June 23rd, the show will feature a restaurant in Iruma City, Saitama Prefecture, that serves delicious food in generous portions.
This restaurant was founded in the Showa era. The moment the food arrives at the table, customers exclaim things like, "That's insane!" and "That's amazing!" According to regulars, it's known locally for its large portions and delicious food, and there's a line of customers waiting even before it opens.
The menu is extensive, with not only a standard three-page menu but also daily and weekly specials. A signature feature is that the female owner herself goes around asking customers, "Is there enough rice?" and asking if they want seconds. The owner is particular about her work, and she carefully checks each dish as it is prepared. Using the rice from the rice container on the serving counter, she makes the final adjustments to the portion size herself.
The "Chicken Cutlet & Ginger Pork Set Meal" (1580 yen) comes with 300 grams of chicken thigh meat, four slices of pork loin, and about two cups of rice. In addition, it includes several small side dishes, miso soup, and udon noodles. A customer who managed to finish the "Grilled Meat Set Meal" (1390 yen), which also comes with several small side dishes, seemed overwhelmed, saying, "Wow, that's a lot of food."
The "Curry Rice" (1050 yen), made with a chicken stock-based roux, comes with several small side dishes, miso soup, udon noodles, and a salad. The daily special also includes curry topped with a fried egg. The regular portion is quite generous, and orders for large portions are rare, but the daily special, "Negitoro & Ginger Pork Set Meal (Large Rice)" (2080 yen), comes with five slices of ginger pork loin, negitoro (minced tuna with green onions), and about five cups of rice.
This restaurant is run by a cheerful second-generation female owner who works with her parents and her son. The idea of serving large portions of rice was introduced by the second generation, and the founder's mother initially strongly opposed it, calling it "crazy." Currently, they cook 6 sho (approximately 1.8 liters) of rice every morning, and sometimes more than 30 sho (approximately 1.8 liters) throughout the day. The reason they include a small bowl of udon noodles with the set meals is because the owner "wants people to know how delicious udon is."
Five years ago, another staff member tried to negotiate an interview, but the shop owner refused. The reason, it seems, was a major accident that nearly rendered the shop owner unable to recover.
The show's MC is entertainer Hiromi, and the host is Eiji Kotoge from the comedy trio "Viking." Singer GACKT will appear as a guest.
