The program "Jūnin Toiro ~Ie ni wa Nure Aru Kazoku no Katachi~" (MBS, Saturdays at 5pm, Kansai local broadcast and others), hosted by talent Mifune Mika and actor Taro Suruga, will feature a house on Awaji Island, Hyogo Prefecture, that was renovated from a 100-year-old vacant house with a total budget of 12 million yen, in its May 2nd broadcast.
The residents are a couple who moved from Osaka City four years ago. Their home is a 100-year-old traditional Japanese house located on the mountain side of Sumoto City, which had been vacant for 30 years. Their total budget was 12 million yen, with the land and house costing 5 million yen. To fund the renovation with the remaining 7 million yen, the couple carried out all the demolition work themselves.
The stylish workbench in the kitchen is a display case acquired from a boutique that closed down on Awaji Island. The solid chestnut wood flooring in the Japanese-style room was a bargain sale item, and the storage furniture is a display case that was given to them. The living room walls were repainted using mud walls from a demolished building, mixed with water and straw, and the dilapidated three-tatami-mat Japanese-style room was converted into a workspace for the wife, who works as a perfumer.
Regarding living in this house, the wife says that despite some inconveniences, "we feel like we're able to live a life where we can really enjoy our own lives." The husband, on the other hand, says, "There are a lot of things that need attention, so that makes us feel more attached to it." They also mention that they actually have more space, and are planning to renovate it and hold workshops and events themed around fragrances.
"Jūnin Toiro" is a program that visits homes across Japan and introduces the unique features and charms of the homes of their inhabitants. After the broadcast, it is available for streaming on TVer for one week.
