The second episode of the Tuesday drama "Toki Sude ni Osushi!?" (TBS, Tuesdays at 10 PM), starring actress Hiromi Nagasaku, aired on April 14th. Kenichi Matsuyama's portrayal of sushi academy instructor Kaito Oedo added color to the drama with his "awkward" personality.
◇The following contains spoilers.
The drama tells the story of Minato Machiyama (played by Nagasaku), who, having finished raising her children, is bewildered by the "time to herself" that she finally has again at the age of 50, but begins her second life and jumps into a "sushi academy" where she can become a sushi chef in three months.
Oedo promised the Minatora students that if they could express "their own flavor" with a single dish of horse mackerel, she would let them move on to making sushi using the fish. Her aim was for them to understand the flavor of the ingredients and find the best way to make the food delicious for others, but her lack of explanation led to trouble with Kurumi (First Summer Uika).
Feeling down, Oedo made a promise to go fishing with Minato on Saturday morning. Minato caught a horse mackerel for the first time in her life, and Oedo prepared it on the spot and served her "rice with horse mackerel roe."
"Are you familiar with the saying, 'Three years to cook rice, eight years to make sushi'?" Oedo began. Reflecting on the rigorous training he underwent to become a full-fledged sushi chef, he revealed that the first dish his master recognized was horse mackerel with egg on top, which he had made as a staff meal.
"Without that experience, I wouldn't be the craftsman I am today. I wanted to share that with everyone. I don't want you to become a craftsman who only has superficial skills."
After learning of Oedo's passionate feelings, Minato encouraged Kurumi, saying, "I'm sure she'll understand. You're just so clumsy!" Afterwards, Oedo revealed that she was divorced.
On social media, comments included: "Clumsy Oedo is irresistible lol", "Teacher Oedo is overwhelmingly lacking in words lol", "Teacher Oedo's occasional glimpses of humanity are also amusing", "The scene where he talks about cooking rice for 3 years and making sushi for 8 years was touching. I hope he tells that story in front of his students too", "I can't believe the teacher is divorced", and "Kenichi Matsuyama's facial expressions are hilarious".
