It has been revealed that the popular drama "Midnight Diner," based on the manga by Yaro Abe and starring actor Kaoru Kobayashi, will be making a comeback. Seventeen years have passed since the first drama adaptation, and this new series will be the first in seven years. Kobayashi, who plays the master, commented, "I am most happy and excited to be able to deliver an even more powerful new 'Midnight Diner' to everyone. We look forward to your visit to Midnight Diner."
"Midnight Diner" is based on the manga of the same name by Abe, serialized in "Big Comic Original" (Shogakukan). Set in a small diner called "Meshiya" located in a corner of a bustling city, which is only open from midnight to 7 a.m., the story unfolds a humorous and sometimes poignant portrayal of human relationships. It has been adapted into a drama series a total of five times, from "Midnight Diner" in 2009 to "Midnight Diner 5" in 2019, and also into films in 2015 and 2016. Furthermore, it has been remade as a drama and film in South Korea and China.
Kobayashi said, "The drama 'Midnight Diner' is returning after seven years. During that time, we also had the coronavirus. The regular cast members have all gotten a little older (laughs). I think the Master's hair has turned whiter than last time. But of course, I'm happy that it's returning. I've heard many people eagerly awaiting a new season."
The new series will air this fall in the late-night drama slot "Dramaism" on MBS and TBS.
