It has been announced that the opening performance of pianist Hayato Sumino, who has an unusual background having completed graduate studies at the University of Tokyo, at the Rheingau Music Festival in Germany on June 21st will be broadcast and streamed on WOWOW on August 23rd. In addition, a lineup of three programs titled "Hayato Sumino Special," including past piano recitals by Sumino, has also been announced.
The Rheingau Festival is one of Europe's largest music events, held from June to September in and around the Rheingau region of Germany, known for its wine production. Kadono will perform at the festival in 2024 and 2025, and will be appointed as the festival's artist-in-residence in 2026. During the festival, she will perform seven concerts, working on a diverse program that includes collaborations with orchestras, solo recitals, and participation in a jazz trio with Shun Ishiwaka and Marty Holoubek, known for "JAZZ NOT ONLY JAZZ".
WOWOW will broadcast and stream the concert held as the opening of the music festival, featuring the prestigious Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra. Under the direction of Music Director Altinoglu, Kadono will perform Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2. This piece is one of the most popular piano concertos and is also a difficult piece that demands a high level of performance technique. This year, Kadono will perform with many orchestras both in Japan and abroad in addition to the music festival, but this performance and one performance in France are the only ones scheduled to feature Rachmaninoff's No. 2.
The "Hayato Sumino Rheingau Music Festival" will be broadcast and streamed on WOWOW Live and WOWOW On Demand from 9 PM on August 23rd. The program will include: Polovtsian Dances (Borodin), Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Op. 18 (Rachmaninoff), and Enigma Variations, Op. 36 (Elgar).
The three programs in the "Hayato Sumino Special" are as follows:
"Penthouse ONE MAN LIVE TOUR 2025 “Midnight Diner” Festival" (August 13, 8pm, WOWOW Live/WOWOW On Demand): This performance took place on June 21, 2025, at Tokyo International Forum Hall A (Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo), and featured a joint performance with "Penthouse," a city soul band originating from a club at the University of Tokyo.
"Welcome to Penthouse ~ 'City Soul' Band Member Special Interview" (9:50 PM on the same day, WOWOW Live/WOWOW On Demand): An interview program in which the members of Penthouse passionately discuss the appeal of their band sound.
"Hayato Sumino Piano Recital 'Klassik Arena'" (10:15 PM on the same day, WOWOW Live/WOWOW On Demand): An arena performance held on November 29, 2025, at K Arena Yokohama (Nishi-ku, Yokohama City), which was an unprecedentedly large-scale piano concert.
