Actor Atsuko Maeda attended the Japan premiere of the sci-fi film "Project Hail Mary" (directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, released on March 20th), starring Canadian actor Ryan Gosling, held in Tokyo on March 12th.
In this film, the protagonist, a teacher named Grace (Gosling), teams up with Rocky, an unknown life form she encounters in space. When asked who would be the perfect buddy for her, Maeda immediately replied, "My only son." She also expressed her hope that the two would watch the film together, saying, "I think he'll be happy with this film. I'd love to go to the cinema with him." After hearing the reviews of the film, she said, "I might cry," and added, "I want to watch it clutching a handkerchief."
Also appearing at the Japan premiere were astronaut Soichi Noguchi, the couple Mika Anne and Theodore Miller, model and talent Sumire who is a big fan of Gosling, talent Michopa Ikeda Miyu, actor Atsuko Maeda, talent couple JOY and Mai, and Dai and Shun, who attracted attention after getting together on a Netflix male romance reality show.
This film is based on the bestselling novel of the same name (Hayakawa Publishing) by popular author Andy Weir, who also wrote the original novel "The Martian," which was adapted into the 2015 film "The Martian." The story is set in the future, when an abnormal event occurs in which solar energy is stolen due to an unknown cause.
In order to avert an unprecedented crisis, the world's greatest minds come together and discover a single, untouched star 11.9 light-years away. Humanity's only remaining option is to travel there in a spaceship and solve the mystery that will save the sun and all of humanity. Grace (Gosling), a middle school science teacher, is sent into space for a "Hail Mary" project, where she meets Rocky, an unknown lifeform with the same goal. Though the two differ in language, physique, and common sense, they communicate through science as a common language and build a bond of trust. Together, they risk their lives to embark on a mission to save their homeland.
