In the TBS Sunday Theatre "Reboot" (Sunday 9pm) starring actor Suzuki Ryohei, Makita Aju plays Adachi Tsubasa, a young detective who belongs to the "Gido Squad" led by Gido Ayumu (Suzuki) of the Metropolitan Police Department's First Investigative Division. Makida, who said "this is my first time playing a detective role," revealed what she paid attention to when acting, anecdotes from working with Suzuki, and her "favorite cast member."
◇ First time taking on a detective role. "The lines are..."
-Please tell us your honest thoughts when you received this offer.
I've played a lot of student roles up until now, and not much experience playing working adults, so this was my first time playing a detective and I had to use a lot of technical terms that I don't normally use, so at first I thought the lines might be difficult.
However, the script written by Mr. Kuroiwa (Tsutomu) was full of truly unpredictable developments and was the kind of script that made me want to read it over and over again, so I was really looking forward to being able to take part.
-What kind of role do you think Adachi Tsubasa, the character you're playing, is?
As a rookie detective, he is proactive in his investigations, and if he senses even the slightest bit of something odd, he cannot help but investigate. I think that his nature of wanting to know the truth no matter what may have influenced him in some ways, making the story more complicated.
The character is very polite and uses phrases such as "~go desu", but this politeness can sometimes be difficult to follow.
--This is your first time playing a detective, so is there anything you pay attention to when acting?
I haven't played many roles that require me to speak so clearly until now, so I'm careful about my pronunciation while acting, thinking, "I hope I don't stumble over my lines, I hope I don't stumble over my lines..." (laughs).
Shortly after filming began, there was a scene where Adachi gave an investigation report in front of a large number of cast members, and even then I went into filming thinking, "I'm not going to get in trouble."
It's a wording that I don't normally use, so I find it a little difficult.
◇The acting spirit seen in Suzuki Ryohei
--Gido is Adachi's direct superior, but what is your impression of Gido as a superior?
Although he can be strict with his language, he always looks out for me and lets me do what I want to do, even if he nags me about it, so I get the impression that he might actually be an ideal boss.
However, he walks fast, so it's quite hard to keep up with him at a trot while always out of breath (laughs). I think that the fact that they are polar opposites in terms of character, with the clumsy Gido and the straightforward Adachi, actually makes them work well together as a team.
-What impression did you have of Suzuki Ryohei, who plays the dual roles of Gido and Hayase after he reboots into Gido, during filming?
One time, he said, "This scene in this movie is great!" and showed us the video on his smartphone, explaining with great enthusiasm, "Here, he does this, and then he does that, but his eyes are like this." He was always talking about acting like that on set, so I thought he really loves acting.
Also, when filming had just begun, I often saw Suzuki listening to the audio of Matsuyama Kenichi, who played the real Hayase, and imitating his voice. It was also impressive that he came to the set even when there were no scenes for him to film, and watched Matsuyama's acting intently. I remember very well how I wondered what the footage would be like on air, and how I looked forward to the first episode even more.
◇The focus is on "ultimate love" and the "oshi" is that person who "disappeared quickly"
--There are many characters with strong personalities in this work, but please tell us about any characters or cast members that caught your eye.
I was personally very excited to see Tsuda Atsuhiro (Diane) playing Ando, a senior member of the underground organization. Before I knew Tsuda would be appearing, I was talking to Nakagawa (Daisuke), who plays Teramoto (Meto), Adachi's partner, about who our favorite comedians are, and we both said Tsuda was our favorite.
Soon after, I found out that Tsuda-san would be appearing, so I was very happy, but we weren't able to film together, so I was looking forward to it airing. (After the embezzlement was discovered in the first episode) He disappeared soon after (laughs).
--Finally, the story is finally reaching the halfway point, so please tell us what points and highlights you would like us to pay attention to.
The cast is truly amazing and I think it's a production with a very large scale, but I also think that another point that I would like people to pay attention to is ``love.''
As part of my role, I interact with the Hayase family a lot, and I really felt the strength of their love, or rather, the strength of their belief that ``I can do bad things for the person I love,'' so I think that is one of the major highlights of the show.
It's a story set in a very dark world, but I hope you can feel the ``ultimate love'' and the idea that ``love is the greatest justice'' within it.
