The latest installment in the animated film series "Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway's Flash" (directed by Murase Shukou), "Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway's Flash: Circe's Witch," will be released in 426 theaters, including IMAX, on January 30, 2026. When discussing the Universal Century history of the Gundam series, the three characters that always come up are Amuro Ray, Char Aznable, and Lalah Sune. The relationship between these three characters, which began in "Mobile Suit Gundam" and continued through "Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack," symbolizes the difficulty of mutual understanding between people and the clash of souls that can only come together in the midst of war. This same structure is evoked in "Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway's Flash." It seems as though the destinies left behind by Amuro, Char, and Lalah will be passed on to Hathaway Noah, Kenneth Sleg, and Gigi Andalusia. ◇Amuro and Char decisively miss each other
Amuro and Char were fated rivals, with a complicated relationship filled with hatred, respect, jealousy, and mutual respect. Lalah was the one who connected the two. As a Newtype, Lalah had a high level of sensitivity and deeply understood the hearts of Amuro and Char. However, Lalah's death severed the two, creating an eternal gap between them.
People who should have understood each other are decisively at odds due to their positions and destinies. The relationship between Amuro, Char, and Lalah may embody the "contradiction between love and hate" that permeates the entire Universal Century.
◇ Gigi steps into the “clash of justice”
Hathaway, Kenneth, and Gigi in "Hathaway's Flash" also influence each other and move towards conflict. Hathaway is influenced by the ideals of both Amuro and Char and tries to change the world for the sake of justice. Meanwhile, Kenneth is a soldier who fights alongside Hathaway to protect national order. Gigi, like Lalah, appears in the story as a third person who understands and shakes up the two characters, from a perspective that is neither of these two.
Gigi has a keen insight into people's true nature and emotions. He discerns Hathaway's true nature and understands Kenneth's hesitation. Like Lalah, who stood between Amuro and Char, Gigi unconsciously steps into a "clash of justice."
The story of Amuro, Char, and Lalah ended in tragedy. When justice clashes with justice, what do people protect and what do they give up?
