A new anime project for Osamu Akimoto's popular manga "Kochikame" has been launched, and it has been revealed that a new anime, "Shin Kochikame" will be produced. It will be produced by Gallop, the same studio that produced the 1996 anime "Kochikame." The new anime project was launched to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the original manga's serialization.
A teaser visual depicting Ryotsu Kankichi with the Katsushika Ward Kanamachi Water Purification Plant intake tower in the background has been released. Details such as new cast members will be announced in September 2026.
"Kochikame" is a comedy manga set in downtown Tokyo and depicts the chaos caused by Ryotsu Kankichi, a police officer with extraordinary physical strength and a warm-hearted personality. It began serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1976 and ran for about 40 years until 2016.
The manga has been published in 201 volumes, with a total circulation of over 150 million copies. It has also been adapted into an anime, live-action film, stage play, and video game.
