Kazuyoshi Takeda, the author of the manga "Peleliu: Guernica in Paradise," which depicts the young people who lived on Peleliu Island, a fierce battlefield during the Pacific War, will appear on the program "Hokkaido Road: What do war paintings tell us? Thoughts on modern war painters," which will be broadcast on NHK General TV (Hokkaido block) from 7:30 pm on December 12th.
During the Pacific War, "war paintings" were created on the theme of war. Many were commissioned by the former Japanese military to boost the fighting spirit of the people.
This painting was also done by some of Hokkaido's leading artists. Three years ago, one of the largest works in Hokkaido was discovered at a shrine in Hakodate, and a large number of sketches made on the battlefield were left behind in Kutchan Town. How did these artists view the war and try to convey it? In this program, Takeda, who is from Iwamizawa, searches for these untold thoughts.
NHK ONE will be streaming the show for one week after it airs (available nationwide).
