A digital comic called "Kumioshi DigiColle! Kimengumi" has been released, featuring selected episodes from Motoei Shinzawa's comedy manga "High School! Kimengumi," which was serialized in "Weekly Shonen Jump" (Shueisha) in the 1980s. The series is also attracting attention for being adapted into an anime for the first time in about 39 years.
In addition to "Kimengumi (1)," which mainly features episodes about Ichidou Rei and Kimengumi members Reikoshi Go, Idese Kiyoshi, Oma Jin, and Monohoshi Dai, the lineup includes five titles: "Irodokogumi," "Udegumi," "Banban," and "Otomegumi." Each will cost 385 yen. In January 2026, four new titles will be added, including "Kimengumi (2)," "Heroine Group" members Yui Kawakawa and Chie Uru, and a group of unique teachers, bringing the total to nine titles.
The original series began serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1980 as "3-nen Kimengumi" (Third Year Kimengumi), and was renamed "High School! Kimengumi" in 1982 as the characters advanced to higher education. It's a slapstick school comedy featuring the Kimengumi, a group of five middle school students: Ichidou Rei, Reikoshi Go, Idese Kiyoshi, Oma Jin, and Monohoshi Dai, along with Kawakawa Yui and Uru Chie. The TV anime, which aired from 1985 to 1987, also garnered popularity with its theme song by Ushiroyubi Sasaregumi, a spin-off unit of the idol group Onyanko Club. The new anime will air on Fuji TV's Noitamina block every Friday at 11:30 PM starting January Getsuku, 2026.
