The music video for "Ex-Otogibanashi," the main theme to the original anime "Super Kaguyahime!", the first feature-length directorial work by Chainsaw Man Yamashita, who has worked on the opening videos for popular series such as the first Jujutsu Kaisen of the TV anime "Jujutsu Kaisen" and "Chainsaw Man," has been released on YouTube. The work is a "music anime" with a story based on the classic "The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter," and has been attracting attention for featuring music from a number of renowned Vocaloid producers. Ryo from the creator group "supercell" wrote the main theme.
"Ex-Otogibanashi" is sung by Tsukimi Yachiyo, the administrator and diva of the virtual world Tsukuyomi, played by Saori Hayami Saori, and the concept is that a song based on "Princess Kaguya" is sung by Tsukuyomi's diva. The music video is centered around impressive scenes of Japanese-style architecture and sparkling, floating neon lights, in order to show the worldview of Tsukuyomi. It makes abundant use of cuts from the anime itself, expressing the charm of Yachiyo, Tsukuyomi's charismatic presence.
Ryo commented, "I was given a script that asked me what would happen if a legendary princess born not from a bamboo pole, but from a gaming utility pole that glows in seven colors, made her debut as a VTuber in this Reiwa era. This is the kind of script I was given, and it inspired this song. Princess Kaguya, who has always had the ending of her story given to her, gets to choose her own story and live it for herself! A rebellion against a fate that has continued for so long. The word that came to me while I was composing the song with this feeling in mind was Ex. Go beyond your fairy tale! That's the kind of song it is. I hope you enjoy it."
The story is about the bond between girls connected by song. One day, 17-year-old high school student Ayaka Sakayori, who leads an incredibly busy life juggling part-time work and studies, meets Kaguya, who appears from inside a gaming utility pole shining in seven colors.
Studio Colorido, known for "Penguin Highway," and Studio Chromat, led by director Yamashita, are teaming up to produce the anime. Music will be provided by a stellar lineup of Vocaloid producers, including ryo from "supercell," kz from "livetune," 40mP, HoneyWorks, Aqu3ra, and yuigot. The main cast includes Yuko Natsuyoshi as Kaguya, Anna Nagase as Ayaka Sakayori, and Hayami as Tsukimi Yachiyo. The film will be available worldwide exclusively on Netflix from January 22, 2026.
